Ultrasound

Although at the mention of ultrasound, many people think of pregnancy, ultrasound is extremely useful in detecting and diagnosing many other conditions throughout the body.  Ultrasound uses sound waves to obtain images of various organs and tissues in the body.  During the exam, a transducer is used to transmit high frequency sound waves through your body.  The transducer picks up the echoes of these sound waves and converts them into an image on a computer screen.  Ultrasound is commonly used to detect such things as aneurysms, tumors, cysts and gallstones.

Ultrasound is commonly used to monitor pregnancies because it is a completely safe and non-invasive exam.  The scan can provide a wealth of knowledge about a pregnancy without the need for exploratory surgery.  An ultrasound can show the fetal heartbeat, the growth of the baby's skull and body, and many congenital abnormalities.
